As the reigning World, Champions Trophy, Oceania Cup, Hockey World League and Commonwealth Games title holders, few can dispute that Australia’s “Kookaburras” are one of the most formidable teams in the game. The side endured a torrid time at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where a sixth-place finish was their worst since 1960 and the first time that they had failed to medal since 1988.

The team selected by Head Coach Colin Batch – the former Australian international who stepped into the role at the start of 2017 following spells overseeing Belgium’s Red Lions and New Zealand’s Black Sticks – is certainly not lacking in quality.

Mark Knowles, the FIH Player of the Year for 2014, remains a central figure in defence, as does the ever-reliable Matthew Swann, while brilliant midfielder Eddie Ockenden – who is rapidly closing in on 300 international caps – makes a welcome return after missing the Hockey World League Semi-Final in Johannesburg due to the birth of his son.

Penalty corner star Jeremy Hayward and quicksilver attacker Jake Whetton are also world class performers for a team that is looking to defend the Hockey World League title that they won in 2015.

Who to watch: Mark Knowles. The sole survivor of the Olympic gold medal winning Kookaburras team Athens 2004, Mark Knowles remains one of the world’s finest defenders and is likely to be a central figure for the team in Bhubaneswar.
